Kentucky Institute for Economic Development (KIED)

    The Kentucky Institute for Economic Development offers intensive training in the basic principals of economic development. The Institute's objective is to provide practical knowledge to public and private sector economic development staff and community volunteers to equip them with the tools to compete more aggressively and successfully for economic development projects.

    Who should attend:

    • Chamber of Commerce directors and staff
    • Industrial and commercial facility managers
    • Contractors
    • Realtors
    • Planners
    • Developers
    • Officers of financial institutions
    • Engineers
    • Public utility representatives
    • State and local government officials
    • Concerned citizens

    The more than 15 presenters in this week-long training program are nationally recognized economic and community development practitioners. The Kentucky Institute for Economic Development has a reputation for quality that enables it to attract some of the best speakers in the nation. The focus is on practical economic development strategy - a shirt-sleeves, how-to approach.

    This course is one of twenty (20) Economic Development Courses accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

    IEDC partners with a number of educational institutions increasing opportunities for training in economic development

    In 2005 KIED became a certified provider for the GOVERNOR'S OFFICE FOR LOCAL DEVELOPMENT COUNTY ELECTED OFFICIALS TRAINING INCENTIVE PROGRAM. Elected officials eligible to participate in this program received approximately thirty (30) hours of credit.

    Scholarships are available through the Kentucky Association for Economic Development and several corporate sponsors.

    The 2008 KIED will be held in Lexington, Kentucky, August 18-21. Registration fees are $590.

KIED Scholarship Criteria

    Must be a KAED member in good standing (mandatory, except for those awarded by Gray Construction)

    Must work in economic development in Kentucky (mandatory, except for those awarded by Gray Construction)

    Criteria Weight
    1. Financial need
    Consideration given in priority order: 1) nonprofit, 2) local government, 3) state government and  4) for profit business
    25%
    2. Volunteer contribution to KAED 20%
    3. Economic need of organization, community, region or service area 15%
    4. Review of background and personal resume 15%
    5. Demonstration of desire to enhance professional development 15%
    6. Number of years as member of KAED 10%
